A senior financial analyst in the US posts a typical base range of $89,000 to $120,000, with a midpoint of $105,000, from 249 ranges employers wrote into their job ads.

The level word does most of the work, and the Roman numeral II barely moves it.

The full ladder, analyst to VP, is in our guide to FP&A careers.

How much does a senior financial analyst make?

The typical US senior financial analyst posting from a direct employer ran from $89,000 to $120,000, with a $105,000 midpoint. That's about 26 percent above a plain financial analyst, so check which of these four rows your offer belongs to.

  2. Financial analyst II, 39$71,260 to $105,198 · mid $89,500
  3. Senior financial analyst, 249$89,000 to $120,000 · mid $105,000
  4. Lead or principal financial analyst, 55$99,840 to $150,000 · mid $122,500
Base pay, 589 postings, July 31 to September 29, 2026. The tick marks each midpoint.

The middle half of senior midpoints ran from $95,000 to $118,500, so two senior offers $20,000 apart can both be normal.

This lines up with the FP&A salary data I pulled in August and September.

There, 489 senior analyst ranges came out at a $104,000 midpoint, close enough to plan around.

Where the numbers come from

This page uses 5,189 unique US ads with financial analyst in the title on Adzuna, live between July 31 and September 29, 2026. I kept only the 921 seats where the employer itself wrote a pay range into the ad.

  • Levels come from the title. Senior and Sr. count as senior. II or 2 is its own row. Lead, principal, staff and III count as lead or principal.
  • Other jobs out: investment, equity research, credit, banking, budget analyst, data and systems analyst titles, and anything with manager or director in it.
  • Copies collapsed: each employer, level and range counts once. One large tech employer posted 103 of the ranges, which collapsed to 20.
  • Agencies split out: 33 of the 622. Headline numbers use direct employers only.
  • Base only. Very few ads state a bonus.

Two limits.

  1. It's mostly September, when 544 of the 766 ranges before collapsing were posted.
  2. States that require a posted range show up more, since New York and California make employers put one in the ad.

Is Financial Analyst II the same as senior?

No. A Financial Analyst II is an experienced analyst rather than a senior one. A II posting had an $89,500 midpoint, which is $5,900 above a plain analyst and $15,500 below a senior, and only 6 of the 39 II ranges had a midpoint at or above the senior midpoint.

The II step

About 7%

The rise from the financial analyst midpoint to the Financial Analyst II midpoint. Senior is about 26 percent.

If you're a II weighing a senior posting at another company, that jump is usually a real raise.

If your company numbers its levels, match the duties to a row here, not the numeral.

What does the senior title pay for?

The extra $21,400 on the midpoint pays for work nobody has to check line by line. That's the one-off, higher-stakes analysis a company hands to someone it already trusts, and it's the work to ask for if you want the title.

I was made lead analyst on a diligence team, building the models and the valuation. I was a senior financial analyst at the time.

I didn't lead the deal, and the questions I asked on it are in the messy data answer in our financial analyst interview guide.

From the other side of the desk, an analyst I coached learned to say what a number meant and what to do about it, and made senior about a year and a half later. The two words that did it are in how I develop analysts.

Our guide to what a financial analyst interview is really testing covers how I pick analysts for stretch work.

If you're interviewing for it now, what changes in a senior financial analyst interview covers the questions.

What do lead and principal financial analysts make?

Lead and principal financial analyst postings had a $122,500 midpoint, with a typical range of $99,840 to $150,000. That's about 17 percent above senior, on a small sample of 55, so read it as a sketch rather than a rule.

Nearly half topped out above $150,000, where the title still says analyst but the pay sits near a typical FP&A manager posting.

Where does senior financial analyst pay top out?

Senior financial analyst pay tops out close to manager pay. 79 of the 265 senior ranges topped out at $135,000 or more, the typical FP&A manager midpoint, so the top of a strong senior seat can overlap the middle of a manager one.

What doesn't overlap is the work, because as a senior analyst people came to me for answers, and as a manager they came for decisions, a change I cover in what an FP&A manager makes.

Some senior analyst seats are manager seats with a smaller title and analysts reporting to them, so check who reports to the seat before you judge it by the title.

Do the words after the title change senior analyst pay?

Barely. At finance manager level the words after the title move the midpoint by about $35,000, but at senior analyst level they move it by a few thousand, so a commercial, FP&A or plain title posts close to the same number.

Senior financial analyst midpoint by the words in the title

Title saysMidpoint, postings
Commercial, pricing or sales$107,500, 19
FP&A, planning or strategy$106,500, 29
Plain senior financial analyst$105,000, 213
Accounting, reporting or cost$102,500, 9

The accounting row is only 9 postings, and the rest sit within $2,500 of each other, so at this level the company and the city matter more than the type of work.

That changes once you're a manager, and the finance manager salary data shows an FP&A title posting far more than an accounting one.

Do recruiters post higher senior analyst pay?

A little. 16 agency senior postings had a $108,000 midpoint against $105,000 from direct employers, and their ranges were narrower, about $16,000 wide against $30,000. Sixteen is a small sample, so treat it as a hint, not a reason to favour agencies.

Does senior financial analyst pay change by state?

Only California clearly pays more, at a $114,500 senior midpoint across 55 postings. Every other state with enough postings sat within about $4,000 of the national midpoint, so where the seat is moves your offer less than the level word does.

Senior financial analyst midpoint by state

StateMidpoint, postings
California$114,500, 55
Massachusetts$105,300, 12
Minnesota$105,000, 18
New York$104,750, 14
Illinois$102,500, 24
Texas$101,250, 14
Washington$101,200, 13

For NYC, Chicago or Dallas, use the state rows, since city samples were too small.

This page is US only. Canadian ranges are on the FP&A salary page.

Is $105,000 good for a senior financial analyst?

It's right on the national line. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics had the median financial and investment analyst wage at $102,740 for May 2025. That group mixes corporate analysts with investment and research analysts, so it runs wider than this data.

For a corporate seat, the senior row above is the better check.

How to use a senior financial analyst salary range

Read the level word first, then the state, then the range. A senior financial analyst salary range only tells you something once you know which title row it belongs to and whether the state moves it, and your offer deserves the same check.

Before you apply

  • Check the level: senior, II, or lead. They post very different numbers.
  • Compare the range to that row, not to one financial analyst number.
  • In California, expect about $10,000 more on the midpoint.
  • Read the reporting lines. Analysts under you can mean a manager seat.
  • Write both ends of the range down before the first call.

How I use one mid-process is in how to use a posted range.

Log every range you see, and the free job application tracker works out the midpoint on each one.

The word senior is worth about $21,000. The Roman numeral isn't.
