A finance business partner is an FP&A person who sits with one part of the business, like operations, sales or a technology team, and helps its leader decide what to do with the numbers. In the US, it's usually an FP&A manager with a business-facing brief.

It is mostly a UK title. From July 31 to September 29, 2026, UK employers posted 468 ads with finance business partner in the title.

The US, a far bigger job market, posted 171. Canada posted 27.

The whole ladder, and where this seat sits on it, is in our FP&A career guide.

What does a finance business partner do?

A finance business partner owns the numbers for one part of the business and turns them into a recommendation its leader can act on. Of 171 US ads, 99 use the word "stakeholder" and 65 mention influence, while only 14 mention SQL.

The UK ads say it even louder. 86 percent use "stakeholder" and 62 percent mention influence.

The tools are there. Power BI shows up in 84 of the 171 ads, a lot for one piece of software.

But the people words come first.

I've said finance for a small business should be "more of a decision-making tool", and a business partner is that idea with a job title. How that looks in a smaller company is in the finance manager salary data.

Where the numbers come from

The counts come from 666 job ads on Adzuna with finance business partner in the title, posted from July 31 to September 29, 2026: 171 in the US, 468 in the UK and 27 in Canada. A word counts when it appears anywhere in the ad's text.

Four limits, so you read the counts right.

  1. A mention isn't a requirement. An ad that says "MBA preferred" and one that says "MBA required" count the same.
  2. Common words overcount. "Operations", "technology" and "HR" turn up in ads for reasons unrelated to the team you'd partner.
  3. These are ads, not employers. One company posting the same seat twice counts twice.
  4. Pay is US only, and small. 42 US ads had a range the employer wrote in, and salaries the job board predicted are left out. UK pay wasn't pulled, so there's no currency comparison here. New York and California are among the states that require employers to post a pay range, which is why some US ads carry one.

Finance business partner vs FP&A

In the US they overlap. 92 of 171 finance business partner ads name FP&A, and posted pay sits close to an FP&A manager's. The difference is where you sit. Classic FP&A builds the plan for the whole company from the centre, and a partner does that work for one part of the business, next to its leader.

The seat comes with a tension.

Once you're senior, people stop asking you for answers.

They bring you the "what should we do?" question. I felt that shift when I moved up, and it's in what an FP&A manager makes.

But the partner doesn't make the call.

When a data pipeline I use was throwing things away before I saw them, I asked for it to be fixed. The pipeline "is supposed to bring you data, not make the call."

A finance business partner holds that same line and adds one thing, a recommendation.

One time I did that was a project that asked for money before it could say what it would deliver.

I suggested a smaller first step.

That review is in business partnering in how to get into FP&A.

So next time you send your leader a report, add one line on what you'd do.

Which part of the business do you partner?

In the US, operations comes up most, in 145 of 171 ads, then technology in 74 and commercial in 42. In the UK, the brief leans commercial, with 362 of 468 ads using the word, which is why commercial finance business partner is its own search.

Treat the top two rows as a ceiling.

The smaller ones, like supply chain or R&D at 4 percent, are more likely to mean the team you'd sit with.

I've said before that finance is finance.

The building blocks travel, and the part worth choosing is what you're doing the finance on. I used it to answer why this industry in an interview.

For a partner, that's a choice about which part of the business you'll learn from the inside.

Pick the one whose economics you'd want to understand for the next few years.

What does a finance business partner make?

In the US, 42 finance business partner ads posted an employer range. The median midpoint was $141,650, and the middle half of midpoints ran from $116,050 to $161,375. That sits close to the typical FP&A manager posting, which fits a seat that's usually an FP&A manager.

Across 42 US finance business partner ads with an employer-posted range, posted July 31 to September 29, 2026.

The typical US FP&A manager posting midpoint is $135,000, from a much bigger sample in our FP&A salary data.

The gap is $6,650.

On 42 ads, that's too close to call a premium, so don't ask for one because of the title.

Read the middle half instead.

A partner offer from about $116,000 to $161,000 is normal for this sample.

What skills does a finance business partner need?

The ads put people skills ahead of tools. In the US, 58 percent say "stakeholder" and 38 percent mention influence, against 49 percent for Power BI and 8 percent for SQL. Storytelling shows up in only 6 ads, though explaining the numbers is most of the day.

Three skills separate a partner from a strong analyst.

Say what's late before anyone asks. A leader is waiting on your numbers to decide. When my work runs late, my rule is to communicate, communicate, communicate, because there's usually a dependency on the other side. The close version of that rule is in how I check numbers before they go out.

Bend the model to the question. Power BI in half the ads says the tool matters. But a good Excel test, to me, is about being fluid and adaptive with the problem, not memorizing formulas, and what you have to learn for FP&A covers that.

Take the numbers to the business. Some analysts just want the reports done and the day over. Teams need them. But the partner seat wants the other kind, and that split is in the financial analyst interview guide.

The credentials split by country.

In the US, 53 ads name an MBA and 44 a CPA. In the UK, 2 name an MBA and 6 a CPA, out of 468.

How do you become a finance business partner?

Most people get there from FP&A. Build the forecast for one part of the business, learn how it makes and spends money, then start taking its leader a recommendation along with the numbers. The title often follows the work, so do the work in the seat you already have.

Before you apply for a partner role

  • Own the forecast for one part of the business, even a small one.
  • Add one line on what you'd do to every report you send.
  • Learn how that part of the business makes and spends money.
  • Tell people early when work will be late, and who it affects.
  • Read each ad for who you'd sit with before the tool list.

Nobody hands you the partner work for tidy reports.

As I've put it, "you need to be making a little bit of noise and impact." What that looked like for me is in FP&A salary progression.

Already interviewing? The question about pushing back on a leader's number is the partner job in miniature. It's in our finance manager interview questions.

And if you're earlier than that, how to get into FP&A is the first step, and what an FP&A manager owns is the seat many US partner ads describe.

The numbers are yours. The call is theirs.
